Researchers have discovered that although coral lives in shallow waters in tropical regions, it does not get sunburned because it produces its own sunscreen.
After studying the compounds that are responsible for protecting coral from UV rays, researchers are hopeful that they can develop a tablet which will protect human eyes and skin without having to resort to sun screen and dark glasses.
The first sunscreen in pill form may be available in five years according to scientists at King’s College London. The tablet may have to be prescribed though, as overdosing could cause a deficiency of Vitamin D and lead to weak bones.
