The Barcelona Bridal Week is renowned as the World’s most important Bridal fashion event and recently had its 22nd annual show. Also referred to as the world capital for brides, the event held at Barcelona caters to the wedding industry in general and is strictly a business to business event. Not surprisingly therefore, it is by far the best place to catch key trends of what the brides world over will be wearing, in the upcoming season.
Bridal Trends 2013 : Hannibal Laguna Bridal Collection Spring 2013
Spanish designer Hannibal Laguna presented his collection at the show after a hiatus of several seasons. Known for his romantic and ultra feminine designs, Hannibal’s collection at the Barcelona Bridal week on May 10th was reminiscent of all things airy, ethereal, elegant and last, but not the least – sophisticated.
Silhouettes & Design Features
The collection was a mix of fit and volume and can be best described as a collection having “fragile volumes”. Fitted at the top but with a voluminous skirt, most of the designs were meant for all body types. Vertical lines and oblique cuts make the collection extremely wearable and contemporary.
Inspired by mother nature and all things pretty – the flora and fauna, Hannibal’s collection saw a strong presence of delicate leaves, outlines of petals and feathers in the designs in the form of embellishments, embroideries and add-ons.
Ruffles and layering ensured that the collection maintained a fine balance between the traditional elements and the contemporary ones.
Delicate pleats juxtaposed with beautifully crafted side bows looked beautiful on petite and demure models who carried the wedding dresses with great elan.
The pleats added great movement to the body by providing the required room and lightness to the design.
Fabrics and Colors
Fabrics were the very delicate and extremely suitable for the wedding dresses – silk satins, Chantilly laces, nets, organza and organdy. Sometimes the fabrics were used as a combination, sometimes on their own each time presenting something unique.
Sheer net layers interspersed with solid satins made for interesting combination between textures and fabrics. Delicate floral patterned lace used as a corset and adjoined to an embroidered organdie skirt looked great on the petite models.
Sheer lace fitted sleeves set on dresses with lace corsets and silk skirts looked great and every inch a stylish wedding dress that a pretty bride would look for.
Lace corsets, partially sheer and partially lined looked great with sheets of satin skirt and presented the much needed structure to the otherwise flowy stain drape.

In terms of color, the palette was restricted to pure whites and at the most egg shell whites. Perhaps Hannibal Laguna wanted to stick to the conventional color while playing around with the fabric mix match and oblique cuts and design features of ruffles, pleats and embellishments. Not that anyone is complaining! Whites always have that pristine quality about them and are undoubtedly a hot favorite with almost the brides over!
Makeup and Hairstyle
Simplicity was the key word here. To quote Leonardo Da Vinci – “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Hannibal completely believes in the philosophy, with the designs and colours being fairly simple, the makeup and hairstyles were also kept simple albeit classic!

The models wore their hair in neat up-dos with side parting and only a section of well gelled hair covering a part of the forehead. The style was chic and slick and bought complete attention to the wedding gown. Makeup was also kept to a minimal. Nothing over the top, just neutral shades were donned, which were closest to the models own skin color.
Accessories too were almost negligible. Hannibal Laguna wanted to create an impression with only his dresses, his designs and that he did beautifully by keeping the rest of the look simple and archetypal.
