Designer Stella McCartney is coaxing her contemporaries to ban leather for the upcoming New York Fashion Week on Thursday.
Paul McCartney’s daughter has teamed up for the anti-leather campaign with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She will be hosting an expose of the animal skin trade in a new viral video as part of her efforts.
McCartney said that as a designer she prefers to work with fabrics that do not bleed, which is why she avoids all animal skins. She invited people to join her in exploring the mind-boggling variety of fashion accessories that are made without having to kill an animal first.
The new video reveals how cows who are going to be killed for their skin are first castrated, branded, and dehorned before having their tails cut – and all this is done without painkillers. Once in the slaughterhouse, the cows have their throats cut, and several of them are dismembered and skinned while they are still alive.
